The Faculdade de Medicina do ABC (FMABC) established in Santo André, São Paulo Metropolitan Area, in Brazil, by Federal Decree number 64.062, issued on February 5th, 1969 and acknowledged by Federal Decree number 76.850, of December 17th, 1975, duly registered at the Federal Official Press “Diário Oficial da União” on December 18th, 1975.

The Faculdade de Medicina do ABC was transferred from the Federal to São Paulo State Formal Education System by register CFE n. 62/83 e CEE n. 1713/83, the latter being approved on 16th of November, 1983 and published by São Paulo State Official Press “Diário Oficial do Estado de São Paulo” on 22/11/1983.

Currently it is maintained by Fundação do ABC (FUABC), which is responsible for the financial, economic and operational administration, installed by laws number 2.695 of 24/05/1967 and 2.741 of 10/07/1967 by the Municipality of Santo André, n.1.546 of 06/09/1967 by the Municipality of São Bernardo do Campo and n.1.584 of 04/07/1967 by the Municipality of São Caetano do Sul, Publically Registered at Santo André County, under n.825, of 07/10/1967, book A-2, Legal Corporate Registrar, at page 192. Due to the fact that the cities named after catholic saints start with the letters “A”, “B”, and “C”, this region is commonly known as “ABC region” inspiring the name of the Foundation and the Faculty. Also known as “Greater ABC region”, this area located in the outskirts of Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area has an estimated current population of about 3 million inhabitants.

Since its foundation, FMABC has been promoting the establishment of a qualified faculty body, as well as investing in infrastructure, laboratories and technical resources to exert outstanding medical teaching and research production. In 1999, new graduation courses in healthcare were added to Medicine: Nursery, Pharmacy and Biochemistry. The latter, nowadays, is called Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition FMABC offers graduation courses of Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy and Environmental Health.

The new constitutional precepts that establish universal health coverage and the right of access to integral healthcare have placed the Institution as a privileged partner to fill in the gaps in terms of technical support and assistance in the organization of health models.

In this sense, it establishes a project of integration within the regional public health resources, which provides a wide field of action and learning internship environment for students: Santo André Hospital Centre, Mário Covas State Hospital and Health Centre School, in Santo André, Teaching Hospital Padre Anchieta, University Municipal Hospital of São Bernardo do Campo, Center for Integral Attention to Women's Health, in São Bernardo do Campo, Marcia Braido and Maria Braido Hospital in São Caetano do Sul, and the Specialties Ambulatory of FMABC, conveniently located at the campus itself.

This integration has formalized the community regional health attention of the FMABC and its fulfilled potential to collaborate with the development of programmes and projects in the field of health and medical care of the Region.
